Our show today was packed with topics. We only scratched the surface of most. I have no doubt that we will take on Ohio, protest, education, and motherhood many more times on “MHP.”
For instance, I wanted our education discussion to continue. We will come back to that subject many times in the weeks to come, and with a diversity of voices on the topic. All that to say, if you felt like I do and want more talk about the state of our educational system, don’t worry, we are not leaving this issue behind! A great place to start your homework is Diane Ravitch’s “The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education.”
Regarding the Buckeye State discussion with which we led off the show, read “What Went Wrong in Ohio: The Conyers Report on the 2004 Presidential Election,” by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI). Next, “From Protest to Politics: the Future of the Civil Rights Movement,” a Commentary magazine article by Bayard Rustin. Yes, Rustin talked about the transition from protest to politics as long ago as 1965! I love this article because it is so stunning when you think of when it was written. Also, take a look at Katherine Tate’s “From Protest to Politics: The New Black Voters in American Elections.” It is now a classic political science text.I joked a bit about personhood initiatives today, but they are no joke. They turn women’s private bodies into public matters. A greatbook on this issue is Karla Holloway’s “Private Bodies, Public Texts: Race, Gender, and a Cultural Bioethics.” Last but not least, be sure to check out “Baby Love” from one of today’s guests, Rebecca Walker!
