There’s proof one person can make a difference. A 13-year-old New Jersey girl is changing the way toy manufacturer Hasbro does business.
“My [younger] brother loves to cook and he wants to be a chef when he grows up. And he really wanted an Easy Bake Oven for Christmas,” McKenna Pope said on Jansing & Co Thursday.
But when McKenna was at the store with her parents, she was disappointed to learn the toy oven only came in pink or purple and only featured girls on the box.
McKenna started a petition on change.org for a gender-neutral Easy Bake Oven that received 45,000 signatures. That caught the attention of Hasbro, the company that makes the toy oven.
“They showed me a prototype that they have of a black, silver and blue Easy Bake Oven,” McKenna told msnbc’s Chris Jansing. “They said that they will use gender-neutral marketing… including boys in their ads.”
Hasbro has been working on the new design for 18 months. McKenna’s reaction? “It’s really awesome!”
